Afternoon Tea at Adonia Tea House

ADONIA Tea House in Kerrisdale had been on my list for afternoon tea for over a decade. It’s probably the only place in Vancouver that correctly refers to the delightful afternoon meal as afternoon tea and not high tea. Moreover, the old-fashioned interior design reminded me of being in the parlour of a heritage building.

Once again, my friend Tess and I caught up over tea and we could not have been happier with our table [near the entrance] as it offered more privacy.

We both chose the Mini Afternoon Tea for $25 per person which was ample food for both of us. We each had three finger sandwiches, one warm scone, three pastries, and our own pot of tea (refillable).

With an array of tea to choose from (there’s also wine, champagne, juice, hot chocolate, and coffee), I found it hard to select something when everything sounded like the ideal tea choice. Eventually I settled on the Peach Vineyard Organic, an Indian black tea with apples, grapes, and marigold petals (a combination of which tastes like peach?). Our tea came in glass tea pots (with a warmer) so we could see our loose-leaf tea with dried fruit floating at the top. Even after our server came to refill our tea pots with water, I was impressed that my tea still tasted fresh.

From my previous afternoon tea posts, I have pointed out that I usually skip the scones until the end or take them home. I have rarely been satisfied with scones as they usually crumble or are too dry or too filling and prevent me from getting to the sweets. (Admit it; it’s all about the pretty treats!) When our scones arrived, we were told that these were warm (i.e. freshly baked) so against my habit, I ate the cheese scone (my friend had the cranberry scone) first. The portion was just right that I still had room for everything else on the tiers. I later learned that all the food is made fresh daily.

Although the tea house was very busy that day, we never felt rushed to leave. By the time we did leave, which was more than two hours later, our table was quickly cleared and cleaned for the next guests to enjoy. That’s what I call prompt and professional service!

Adonia is now in my top three afternoon tea venues in Vancouver. Make this the place to go on your next tea date!
