Game of Thrones Costumes

Winter is back! Game of Thrones S6 aired on Sunday in North America and Monday in the UK, featuring new costumes by April Ferry. Ms Ferry won an Emmy Award for her Ancient Roman costumes for HBO’s Rome. Today’s post will be looking at some of the costumes by Michele Clapton, who was the GOT costume designer for S1-5. Ms Clapton has designed costumes for a number of period dramas, such as BBC’s Sense & Sensibility (2008), Channel 4’s The Devil’s Whore (2008), Queen of the Desert (2015), and Netflix’s The Crown (2016). She is known for her elaborate hand embroidery.

Two years ago, I had the opportunity to see the Game of Thrones exhibition in Vancouver, BC. The selection of costumes on display were from S4 (unless I’m mistaken), but naturally, I was drawn to the elegant King’s Landing high court costumes.

My favourite costume was Cersei’s red dress. I loved the fabric and the Medieval-inspired (so I assume) style of the dress.

Although I was not in love with Margaery’s first wedding dress for her wedding to King Joffrey, I really liked all the roses. On Ms Clapton’s website, you’ll find close-up photos of the embroidery from the Purple Wedding.

I loved the fabric used for Sansa’s wedding dress for her wedding to Lord Tyrion, even though I was not a fan of the ‘armoured’ hips. Nevertheless, the dress is probably the most regal in the series – at least in my opinion.

Lastly, although Daenerys is one of my favourite characters on GOT, I can’t say I’ve been a fan of her costumes – although I do like seeing her in blue. If you take a look at the details of her other costumes, you’ll see that they’re meant to resemble dragon scales.

If the GOT exhibit happens to be visiting again, I highly recommend queuing for the Ascend the Wall experience and pretend you’re one of the Night’s Watch going up the lift to the top of the Wall!
