I don’t often take the time to leave comments, but I love period dramas and I really appreciate you taking the time to write out such a comprehensive list! I have your site bookmarked and I refer back to it often.
Hi Elisabeth!
Thank you very much for leaving a comment! I greatly appreciate it and I am so glad to hear that this list is as helpful to you as it is to me! 😉
Hi there, I just watched this trailer to a show called Taboo (set in the 1800s) featuring Tom Hardy which will be airing on FX sometime this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9QvSry2-CM
Hi there, here’s a new show coming out called Taboo (set in the 1800s) featuring Tom Hardy which will be airing on FX sometime this year.
Hi Nessnola! 🙂 Yes, I’ve added it to the Dates TBC list. Will you be watching it? Some of the scenes look too gory for me! :S
Yes, I’m looking forward to it. I’ve been a fan of Tom Hardy since The Virgin Queen and Wuthering Heights 🙂
Oh are you? Have you seen him in Peaky Blinders?
Jericho has been cancelled by ITV. I wish Netflix or Amazon Prime or Masterpiece would pick it up for a second season, because we all want to know who shot Davey. It can’t just end on a cliffhanger. Will someone make “Bring Back Jericho” or “Save Jericho on Facebook and twitter, please?
I didn’t know Jericho was axed! Thank you for the update. I didn’t get to finish the series but I’ll get around to it later. I hate cliffhangers. Here’s hoping Amazon will pick it up!
What about Still Star-Crossed? I’m not sure, but I think I heard that it would premiere in early 2017 in the U.S.
Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention, Katie! I love anything R&J-related!

Psst, I’m sure you didn’t mean anything by it, but with regards to The Danish Girl– transgender isn’t usually used as a noun but as an adjective modifying a noun, i.e. transgender woman (and the preferred pronoun hers, rather than his/hers) in the case of Lili Elbe.
Thank you for making your lists! I reference them frequently!
Thank you for the clarification, EB! I should know this because my friend explained this to me before. :S
Thank you for visiting my site! 🙂
There was also The Jungle Book with Ben Kingsley as Bagheera and Bill Murray as Baloo, which is a period film in it’s own right.
I kept trying to find a date/period for The Jungle Book but failed at finding anything. That is why I listed it in the Costume Dramas page instead. I might end up moving The Jungle Book after I watch the movie.
Would you count the recent Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai remake with Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt as a period drama?
I would count it as a ‘historical drama’ as it’s supposed to be set in 1879.
Sometime in early 2017, a filmed version of the stage musical “Newsies” by Disney (based on the 1992 “Newsies” musical film) will be released in movie theatres by Fathom Events starring Jeremy Jordan. The musical and movie are based on the real newsboys’ strike of 1899.
Thank you Eponnia! I still haven’t finished watching the 1992 Newsies but really enjoyed the first half. I will share this with my friend. 🙂
The Son with Pierce Brosnan will premiere in spring 2017 🙂
Thank you Sophie!
