If you’re visiting Steveston, one of the free places to visit is the Britannia Shipyard, a National Historic Site.
It’s a 15 minute walk from the docks and is opened daily from 10am to 5pm (12pm to 5pm during winter: 1 October to 30 April). Many of these colourful houses date back to 1885 and were previously inhabited by the multi-ethnic workers (First Nations, Chinese, Japanese, and European) from the Britannia Cannery and Britannia Shipyard. Inside each house, you’ll find photographs and artefacts that showcase how the residents would have lived back then. Here are some photos I took back in 2011 or 2012.
