Out of the 7 Lancôme Hypnôse mascaras (all $27 USD except for Star, which is $28) in 1-3 shades (black, brown, excessive black), the Duchess of Cambridge uses Custom Volume Mascara, according to hrhduchesskate. I was quite surprised that the Duchess didn’t use a waterproof mascara as I would have opted for, as nothing is worse than smudged mascara and raccoon eyes. Perhaps it’s her Khol eyeliner that hides any smudges. Perhaps it’s the lousy mascaras I’ve used in the past that smudged easily on my combo skin, which is oilier in the summer (natural mascara remover?). Having seen prime results from various Lancôme Hypnôse mascaras, I decided to give them a try. However, I could not risk using a non-waterproof mascara so I picked the [Custom Volume] Waterproof mascara. It’s ‘sticky’ to put on but I was amazed by how my lashes ‘grew’ in front of my eyes. Best of all, it really didn’t smudge (unlike some waterproof mascaras)! It’s meant to have a 16-hour hold. Prior to using Hypnôse Waterproof, the only mascara that won my approval – and is still one of my favourites – was Bobbi Brown’s No Smudge Mascara ($25 USD). Another alternative is Japan’s #1 mascara, d.j.v. beautenizer Fiberwig LX ($22), which WWKD’s The Duchess swears by. The one I’m currently using is d.j.v. Fiberwig Paint-On False Lashes which I find a tad sticky to apply but easy to take off (just warm WATER!).

When I bought the Waterproof mascara, I was gifted a mini Hypnôse Drama mascara, but I found it was too chunky though it really made my lashes more visible. One coat will do just fine! Recently, I was also lucky to find the Lancôme Hypnôse mascara (the one that the Duchess uses) at a Winners on sale and now it’s my go-to mascara. Unlike Waterproof, this one is easier and faster to apply (not sticky), and doesn’t seem to smudge (let it dry first!). I get the length and volume that I want. Ideally I would like to get my hands on Doll Lashes for a wide-eyed look.

Have you used any Lancôme mascaras and, if so, which one(s) did you like?

  1. So glad to read your review (and I stand by my stance on the Fiberwig!) Will have to check out the Lancome one though, as it’s one a lot of people rave about. xo

    • The Fiberwig is my favourite for my out-of-town trips because it’s so easy to wash off. 🙂 However, after trying quite a few Lancome Hypnose mascaras, I found that the wands don’t work with my eyelashes. I need the silicone (?) bristles to lengthen my lashes without any clumping.
Currently, I am a great fan of L’Oreal’s Voluminous Butterfly Waterproof mascara and Clinique’s High Lengths mascara. 🙂
